5 Things to Keep Out of Your Septic Tank at All Costs

Last updated 2 months ago

Your home’s septic tank is the final destination of water that runs down the drains in your sinks, washing machine, dishwasher, toilets, and baths. Maintaining the proper function of a septic system requires a certain amount of care on the part of the homeowner. On that note, here are five things you should be sure to keep out of your septic tank at all costs:

  • Food

Bits of food can find their way into your septic tank through the drain in your dishwasher or from your kitchen sink. Unless you have a dishwasher that can grind food waste, make sure that plates are clear of food before they are loaded to be washed.

  • Oils, Paints, and Fuels

In addition to food, cooking oil that finds its way down your kitchen sink can cause serious septic system trouble. Paints and oils on clothes are sometimes washed into the system through your washing machine. Keep all residue from paint, oils, or other industrial materials out of your septic system.

  • Powerful Cleaning Agents

When cleaning your home with bleach or other powerful cleaning agent, be sure that you do not let large amounts into your drain. Your septic system depends on a particular balance of bacteria to do its job, and a substance like bleach will disrupt its function.

  • Foreign Objects

Because the drain of a toilet is larger then on a sink, people sometimes think it is ok to flush items down it. Never flush anything down your toilet that is not meant to be flushed, including feminine hygiene products, cigarettes, rags, or plastic items.

  • Drain Cleaners

If you’ve been dealing with a clogged drain yourself, be careful of the amount of drain cleaning chemicals you use. Although these agents can sometimes help to break up hair and other materials blocking the drain, they can damage the health of your septic systems the way that other household cleaning chemicals can.
